Its history dates back to the Ryukyu Dynasty, and the name "Agu" comes from a word in the Okinawan dialect meaning "monster" or "spooky creature," due to its unique appearance.

This native black pig, the Agu pig, is raised in Okinawa's unique environment without being influenced by foreign species, and its rarity makes it highly valued.

The distinctive feature of the Shima Kurobuta Agu pig is its rich meat quality and excellent health benefits.

The marbling is 5% more than that of regular pork, and is fine-grained and tender, with the fat having a low melting point of 38.1 degrees Celsius, melting in your mouth.

Furthermore, it contains three times as much glutamic acid as regular pork, giving it a deep, concentrated umami and sweet flavor.

Therefore, it is a perfect match for sukiyaki dishes.

The raising of black Agu pigs requires strict management, resulting in meat that is almost completely free of the characteristic odor.

It is also recommended for health-conscious people as it has low cholesterol, 1/4 of the cholesterol of regular pork.
